In hydraulic cylinders, there is something more interesting than what you can see from its exterior. For the pressurized fluids to maintain, a hydraulic cylinder system will keep in motion to support the industrial process. Two basic categories are needed to have high-performance seals – dynamic and static seals.
Understand the Two Categories of Hydraulic Cylinders
Here’s an explanation of these two primary categories of hydraulic cylinders:
- Static Seal
This is the type of seal that is not categorized in any movement when fluid is being pressurized. Static includes different rings, namely:
- Back-up rings
- Cover seals.
One of the most basic examples of a static ring is the O-ring. It is a kind of static ring that is more flexible and versatile, which is available in different hydraulic cylinder seals by size. When O-ring placed into the hydraulic cylinder housing and squeeze, the ring will create a strong barrier between the casing and housing.
O-ring is often tied up with back-up rings with pressure over 1500 psi. O-rings made from nitrile rubber, fluoro rubber, and EPDM or ethylene propylene diene are recommended in a multitude of some mineral oils, air, water-based fluids and water itself. Also, both silicone and Polyurethane can be useful for the static environment.
- Dynamic Seal
This seal is subjected to radial or axial movement if pressurized. It includes oil seals, rotating seals, rod seals, wipers or scrapers, and piston steals. Dynamic piston seals restrain pressurized fluids from leaking within the piston as the system pressure keeps on pushing the piston down to the cylinder bore.
Rod seals, on the other hand, grasp pressure in the hydraulic cylinder by restraining fluid from leaking. Moreover, any leakage found in the rod seal can lessen the equipment efficiency, and in other cases, it can cause environmental issues.
Scrappers or also known as wipers blocked contaminants such as dust, dirt, and moisture from entering the hydraulic cylinder as it withdraws back the element into the system. Furthermore, contamination can cause significant damage to seals, cylinder walls, rods, and other components. In different scenarios, it is the primary culprit why a premature seal fails in a fluid-powered system.
